As Burford increases its activity abroad, Managing Director Craig Arnott fields questions from the German publication, Juve, regarding the role of Germany in Burford’s continuing growth in Europe. Additionally, he addresses some common misconceptions about litigation finance in the German legal market that could stand to benefit significantly from legal capital.
“We’re particularly excited about helping corporate clients in Germany, since many of them have strong claims—especially in the area of competition—but no opportunity to work with law firms on a contingent or conditional basis, as corporates in the US and increasingly in the UK are able to do. As a result, over the past few years, we have continued to strengthen our resources to help German clients, including by hiring German-speaking lawyers with expertise in relevant areas of law. We see appetite in Germany to use external finance for both litigation and international arbitration.”
