Manilla Freed is Associate Counsel at Burford Law, the independent ABS law firm that supports and complements Burford’s asset recovery business. In that capacity, she advises on English Law arbitration and litigation matters and provides a coordinating or supportive role in multi-jurisdictional asset recovery projects, working alongside a range of local and international law firms. She also works on direct instruction matters for the bringing of recognition and enforcement proceedings in relation to assets in England & Wales.

The firm provides a flexible, seamless and cost-effective service to judgment and award creditors, participants in insolvency situations, holders of NPL debt and various other creditors and claimants.
Ms. Freed is a Solicitor of England and Wales, as well as a South African qualified barrister, with nearly a decade of experience in general commercial and contractual dispute resolution. Her barrister practice predominantly focused on commercial contract enforcement, company law, banking litigation, insolvency law and governance and regulatory compliance. Prior to her call to the bar, Ms. Freed was a solicitor in the commercial and corporate litigation department of a well-known Johannesburg firm, where her practice focused on servicing major credit providers (and in particular banking institutions) in the retail and wholesale industries.
Ms. Freed earned her LLB Degree from the University of Stellenbosch and undertook her post-graduate studies at the University of South Africa. She has successfully completed the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme examinations in the UK and was admitted as Solicitor of England and Wales during January 2020.
