Christopher Bogart contributes chapter on generative AI and arbitration finance to ICCA Congress Book

Christopher Bogart

Burford CEO Christopher Bogart has authored a chapter in the 2025 ICCA Congress Book exploring the role of generative AI in international arbitration and arbitration finance.

In “Generative AI and Arbitration Finance: Not Yet a Paradigm Shift,” Bogart examines the promise and limitations of generative AI across the legal sector. While AI tools are improving efficiency in arbitration and legal finance, he notes that the technology cannot yet predict outcomes or replace human judgment in investment decision-making.

The chapter highlights that effective arbitration funding requires a combination of proprietary data, machine learning and experienced human analysis, an approach that underpins Burford’s track record of success. It also discusses how AI can assist in identifying potential claims, streamlining diligence and enhancing legal finance modeling, provided that its use remains guided by expert oversight.

Bogart concludes that AI will complement, not replace, human expertise in arbitration finance: “Provided that AI as a tool is integrated effectively, it has the potential not to replace us but to make us better at what we do”
