Christiane Deniger will speak on the panel, “Mining Disputes in Africa: Expect the Unexpected," at London International Disputes Week.

Christiane Deniger, Director at Burford Capital will speak on the panel, “Mining Disputes in Africa: Expect the Unexpected," at London International Disputes Week 2026. The session will take place on June 3 at 11:30am BST.

Africa’s mining sector is being reshaped by a combustible mix of unabated demand for critical minerals, resource nationalism, regulatory volatility, and security challenges across the region. At the same time, the incursions of artisanal miners, ever-changing tax regimes, coups and countercoups are becoming the new normal.

The session will focus on:

  • The rapidly changing commercial and investment-treaty arbitration landscape in the sector, triggered by the impact on long-term projects and supply chains, of challenging security conditions, commodity cycles, tax regime changes, changes in government and resource nationalism.
  • Remedies for the termination of mining concessions, illegal mining and discriminatory tax measures.
  • Sector-specific quantum models in treaty and commercial disputes.
  • Enforcement strategies in disputes involving African states and state-related entities.

Ms. Deniger will be joined by Poupak Anjomshoaa (DWF), Colin Johnson (Alvarez & Marsal) and Solomon Ebere (DWF).
