Florencia Villaggi, Senior Vice President at Burford Capital will speak on the 39th AAA-ICDR – ICC – ICSID Joint Colloquium on International Arbitration panel, "Life after the Award: Courts, Sovereigns, and the Limits of Award Recovery." The session will take place on November 6 at 3:00pm CET.

Securing an arbitral award is often only half the battle. The real test frequently lies in enforcement. In recent years, enforcement has become one of the most contested and politically sensitive stages of international arbitration. Courts are increasingly confronted with applications that touch on sovereign interests, diplomatic considerations, and the treatment of state‑linked assets. At the same time, sovereigns are making use of a widening array of procedural and strategic tools to shape, delay, or resist enforcement, contributing to a more fragmented and uncertain recovery landscape.

This panel will explore how courts handle politically or institutionally sensitive enforcement scenarios, how sovereign conduct influences or complicates proceedings, and what practical approaches award creditors are adopting to navigate multijurisdictional enforcement challenges.

Ms. Villaggi will be joined by Niuscha Bassiri (ArbBoutique), Simon Gabriel (Gabriel Arbitration AG), Christopher Harris KC (Gibson Dunn) and Mohamed Abdel Wahab (Zulficar & Partners).

ICC was founded in 1919 in the aftermath of the First World War, at a time when no world system of rules governed trade, investment, finance or commercial relations. Our founders were a group of industrialists, financiers, and traders determined to replace fear and suspicion with a new spirit of hope and cooperation.
