Jörn Eschment

Director

Dr. Jörn Eschment is a Director with responsibility for leading Burford’s investment arm in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and specializes in assessing, underwriting and managing arbitration, antitrust and commercial litigation matters.

Prior to joining Burford, Mr. Eschment practiced international commercial arbitration and litigation at Herbert Smith Freehills in Hong Kong and at Schellenberg Wittmer in Zurich, representing clients in complex multi-jurisdictional disputes with an emphasis on energy, natural resources, construction and infrastructure. Previously, he had also worked in the Stuttgart office of The Boston Consulting Group and interned at the German Parliament as well as in the Foreign Relations Office of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Qualified in Switzerland and a former Registered Foreign Lawyer in Hong Kong, Mr. Eschment read law as an Adenauer Scholar at the universities of Freiburg, Liverpool, Marburg and Passau, graduating with the German Staatsexamen, an LLM in European law (Dean’s Prize Scholar), and a doctorate in public international law, all with distinction. He also holds an MA from the War Studies Department at King’s College London and has held various academic positions.
