Emily Slater

Emily Slater is a Managing Director at Burford Capital with responsibility for working with US companies and law firms to finance high-value commercial litigation, structuring financing arrangements ranging from single cases to portfolios of matters. She has more than 15 years of experience structuring and underwriting legal finance transactions and has played a significant role in developing Burford’s underwriting processes.

Emily is a frequent speaker on legal finance and has appeared at events organized by the American Bar Association, American Bankruptcy Institute, M&A Advisors and other industry organizations.

Prior to joining Burford, Emily was a litigator at Debevoise & Plimpton, where she specialized in complex securities litigation, commercial disputes and regulatory investigations. She also led a landmark pro bono class action concerning mental health treatment in New York City jails that prevailed before the New York State Court of Appeals.

Emily earned her JD from New York University School of Law, where she was the colloquium editor of the Review of Law and Social Change. She has a BA from Colby College.
