Corporate Counsel, Securities

Burford seeks a Corporate Counsel, Securities who will be responsible primarily for overseeing the Firm’s US securities law compliance and disclosure obligations and the requirements of its New York Stock Exchange listing, as well as related matters.  Currently, the Firm qualifies as a “foreign private issuer” and the related exemptions from the full level of securities law compliance.  It anticipates the full application of these securities law rules and regulations and a transition to US GAAP reporting from IFRS. 

Burford is also subject to the requirements of the LSE, UK Market Abuse Regulation (MAR) and Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). A key component of the role is maintaining and establishing governance processes to support the various disclosure and compliance obligations.

This is an opportunity for a smart and motivated person to carve out a unique and valued role within the Legal & Compliance team, which has a need for an expert to work hand-in-hand with our finance, investor relations, HR and operations teams. The successful candidate for this new position will become the 11th member of Burford’s global Legal & Compliance team, which spans the New York, Chicago and London offices.

Marketing Manager (NYC)

The Marketing Manager will play a critical role in generating thought leadership content to build Burford’s visibility and credibility with leading companies and law firms. Corporate Counsel (US)

The Firm has created a new position for a Corporate Counsel who will handle litigation finance and other corporate and commercial transactions, as well as a variety of other legal matters relating to, among other areas, operations, regulatory requirements, corporate structure and governance.  This is an opportunity for a very smart and motivated person to carve out a unique and valued role within the Legal & Compliance team, which has a need for an additional legal expert to work hand-in-hand with our underwriting, business development, finance and operations teams. The successful candidate for this new position will become the 12th member of Burford’s global Legal & Compliance team, which spans the New York and London offices in addition to Chicago.

Counsel, Legal & Compliance (London)

Burford seeks a Counsel, Legal & Compliance for the UK, Continental Europe and Australasia. The Counsel will be responsible for managing the Firm’s Compliance programme in these jurisdictions, where it counts among its growing businesses an FCA regulated UK operating company, UK and Guernsey after-the-event insurers, a London-based asset-tracing and corporate intelligence team and an SRA-regulated “ABS” law firm. 

The Counsel will come on board to manage Burford’s Compliance programme in the UK, Continental Europe and Australasia at one of the Firm’s most exciting times in its history. The position responsibilities include analyzing the risk profile of cases Burford considers for financing and providing oversight to cases in which Burford has invested. Underwriters must have the ability to quickly evaluate the merits of claims, assess and price risks associated with the arbitration, evaluate arbitration budgets, and negotiate financing deals from start to finish. This position will involve close liaison with law firms, in-house counsel, and corporate representatives, as well as Burford’s global underwriting team.

Vice President – Patent Litigation Case Management (Chicago)

The Firm has created a Vice President (or above, commensurate with experience) position on the case management team, which is responsible for monitoring and maximizing the value of our multi-billion dollar portfolio of existing litigation investments.  The case manager will manage the substantial portfolio of patent cases in which Burford has invested, including staying informed of and reporting on material developments in our investments; monitoring spend vs. commitment and the life cycle of the case; advising senior management on developments and strategic issues; and working with our counterparties to enhance our chances of a successful investment and case resolution. The case manager will work side-by-side with underwriter case owners who originally underwrote the patent investments in the portfolio, and with case managers for commercial litigation and arbitration investments. This case manager also will work closely with law firms, in-house counsel, and corporate representatives, as well as Burford’s global underwriting team. 

The case manager will report to a Managing Director of Burford responsible for managing the firm’s investments and be based in Burford’s Chicago offices.

Vice President - Business Development (US)

Burford Capital is adding a Vice President – Business Development who will be responsible for interacting with CFOs, finance professionals, lawyers and other influencers in our target markets to build relationships and identify cases, portfolios of cases and other opportunities in which Burford may be willing to provide financing solutions.  We are seeking a creative business development professional or former finance professional with an agile mind and previous experience and demonstrated success in developing business within the CFO and executive suite community.  We expect candidates to have deep networks within the CFO community of private and public companies.

The Analyst will play a valued research role within the Asset Recovery Team and be a critical component of the team’s success.
