Meet UTLP – The New Multi-University Licensing Collaboration Model

March 17, 2021

Burford Senior Vice President Emily Hostage will be moderating a panel at the upcoming AUTM conference on Wednesday March 17 at 3:00 PM to 03:45 PM EST.

Fifteen universities have created the University Technology Licensing Program (UTLP) (www.utlp.net), a platform for licensing complementary intellectual property across the multiple universities. Unlike traditional patent pools, UTLP is not limited to a particular standard-essential technology, or even one particular area of technology. Instead, UTLP has identified several important technology areas—including connectivity, autonomous vehicles, and large-scale data processing—in which the UTLP members collectively have made significant contributions to advancements in the field. UTLP aims to overcome the challenges of licensing non-standardized technologies by providing an efficient yet flexible “one-stop-shop” for potential licensees.

UTLP’s members are Brown, Caltech, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Illinois, Michigan, Northwestern, Penn, Princeton, SUNY Binghamton, UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, and Yale. The group made their public debut in January 2021, when UTLP received a favorable business review letter from the U.S. Department of Justice after review of the program’s structure. Join our panel to meet UTLP’s leadership and hear more about this groundbreaking program.
