James Rhodes is a Senior Advisor with responsibility for advising Burford’s litigation finance business. He specializes in complex disputes and has served as Chairman, co-panelist or sole arbitrator in over 50 commercial, investment and securities arbitrations conducted under the auspices of various institutions.
Prior to advising Burford, Mr. Rhodes served as an arbitrator or mediator in many commercial and investment disputes, particularly in the international sector. Mr Rhodes is on the panel of arbitrators for the ICC, AAA, ICDR, IICPR, FedArb, Member of the Panel of Arbitrators of the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration, FINRA and the EDNY. He also has over 40 years’ experience as counsel in international arbitrations and has served as mediator in over 85 commercial disputes. Mr. Rhodes is a former partner with Battle Fowler (now Paul Hastings) and Coudert Brothers, where he represented a wide range of foreign and domestic corporate clients in litigation, arbitration, and antitrust practice matters. Earlier in his career, he was an associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, and a staff attorney with the antitrust division. He is currently non-executive Chairman of S. Gumpert Co. of Canada, Ltd., a privately held food company headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario.
Mr. Rhodes graduated from the University of Texas School of Law and Rice University.
