Joseph Cheavens

Joseph Cheavans is a Senior Advisor with responsibility for advising Burford’s core legal finance business.

Prior to joining Burford, Mr. Cheavans was the firmwide Chair of the Litigation Department and General Counsel of Baker Botts, where he was a partner for more than 30 years. Mr. Cheavans is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has been the Chair of the College’s Emil Gumpert Award Committee. He has handled a wide variety of complex cases during his career, including substantial energy and intellectual property matters, and he has made extensive use of contingency fees and other alternative fee arrangements.

Mr. Cheavans graduated from Harvard Law School and has an undergraduate degree from Baylor University.
